My Florence... story and photography by Elaine Poggi

I first came to Florence in 1974, fell in love with the city and the son of Armando Poggi, and now 33 years later I am still in love!  When I walk down the narrow streets in the center, I always discover something new. Art and history are everywhere.  One of our stores was the home of Donatello! The hidden trattorias serve the most delicious food (the best in town are La Giostra and Buca dell'Orafo just down the street!).  Every day as I sit at my desk in the Armando Poggi office right across from the Duomo, I hear the magnificent bells from Giotto's bell tower.  Often times I hear the music of the bands and see the various processions (such as the famous Calcio in Costume players) marching down Via Calzaiuoli in front of our shops. It seems like the life of the city revolves around the Duomo.  At our Armando Poggi shops, I have a front seat to enjoy it all!

  • My favorite trattoria: La Giostra.  The owner and chef is the prince of Asburgo Lorena!  Just say you are friends of the Poggis and you will be treated royally!

  • My favorite gastronomia:  Perini.  It's a five minute walk from our shops to the Central Market, where Andrea Perini and his brother sell the most wonderful cheeses, salamini, and hams.  These genuine Tuscan products are the best.

  • My favorite hotel: Hotel Sant Maria Novella.  The rooms are all unique, unrepeatable, furnished with superior taste by my friend and owner, Antonella.

  • My favorite bar:  Caffe Gilli.  My husband and I drink our espresso everyday in this famous bar in Piazza Repubblica, which is just two blocks from our shops.
