Vetro di Murano, scopri i segreti dell’artigianato Made in Italy

Murano Glass, discover the secrets of Made in Italy craftsmanship

In the panorama of Italian craftsmanship, Murano glass shines like a precious gem. But how did this magnificent story, queen of Made in Italy, begin? The development of the island of Murano dates back to the 9th century , when the master glassmakers of Venice were removed from the city to reduce the risk of fires. This special confinement gave rise to an extraordinary artisanal excellence that has been handed down from generation to generation, up to the present day.

In Murano, the porphyry streets and the buildings worn by the sea tell stories of masters who for centuries have worked in this forge of creativity, giving life to artistic creations of rare beauty, purchased and collected all over the world. Like all the most beautiful stories, it is likely that this workmanship was born by chance: a fire lit on the beach transformed a lump of sand into a translucent pearl that the Phoenicians - considered the first to know the secret of glassmaking - were able to observe, replicate and make it a thriving source of trade.

How is Murano glass made?

Each object is the result of a complex process. Silica sands, soda and lime are melted together at very high temperatures then, with a few basic tools, the glass mixture is shaped and colored to give life to unique artifacts.

Glass processing includes many techniques, from mouth blowing to the fusion of colored murrine, through the processing of solid glass . In this case, a block of incandescent glass is carefully shaped by the master glassmaker, using iron tongs, the “bronzin” (the plate on which the molten glass is rolled), the “tagiante” (the shears to eliminate the excess glass) and other simple tools to give shape to the sculpture. The skill of the master glassmaker is essential to shape the molten material, according to his artistic inspirations and this is precisely the reason why each piece is unique in its shades, colors and small imperfections.

Other techniques include cold engraving of graphic or floral motifs, enamelling and the application of gold and silver leaf.

As soon as you look at a Murano glass artifact you can't help but fall in love with it: it is bright, colorful, transparent and brings joy to any room. A Murano vase on your sideboard or a lamp in the living room can become true pieces of art that will not go unnoticed. In addition, Murano glass is such a versatile material that it can be used to create many objects, such as lamps and vases, centerpieces and sculptures, glasses, pitchers and many other objects of common use.
