Thun
In the dim light you can see the open mouth, framed by a pair of ruddy cheeks. The mother caresses that little face and, as if wanting to stop that moment of infinite gratitude and sweetness, goes to his studio and makes a clay model of it. You are in Bolzano, on an unspecified day in 1950, and you have just witnessed the birth of the Angel of Thun.
Like the most beautiful works of art, Thun is born from the inspiration of a moment.
The famous Angel – today known in every corner of the world as the symbol of the South Tyrolean city – was followed by the creation of teddy bears and ladybirds, butterflies, hearts, balloons and flowers, in a succession of collections now inspired by nature, now to traditional values of the Thun house, each characterised by the softness of the shapes and the scrupulous choice of raw materials.
Since then, the creative atelier run first by Lene and Otmar Thun, then by their son and grandson, has continued to create unique collections capable of giving you great emotions.
Thun's creations include gift ideas, beautiful and functional household items, decorations and sculptures that soften and warm the heart. Choose an original gift idea, surprise the one you love with a poem by ceramic that makes his spaces joyful and magical.

Thun nativity scene and decorations 2026: Christmas at Armando Poggi in Florence
Every year, when the first Thun ceramics arrive in the store, we know that Christmas is near. On Via Calzaiuoli, just a few steps from the Duomo, we prepare a selection of nativity scenes, figurines, and decorations for the families who come to visit us, the same ones you find on this page.
The Thun nativity scene, to be built year after year
The Thun nativity scene is designed to grow along with your family. You start with the stable and the Holy Family, then each Christmas you add a new character: the Three Wise Men, the washerwoman, the shepherds, the stable animals. The figurines are made of hand-painted ceramic, with the sweet faces and warm colors that make Thun recognizable at first glance. Many customers tell us that the nativity scene has become a family tradition: every year, they choose the new piece together.
Thun ornaments for the tree and home
In addition to the nativity scene, the collection includes ceramic ornaments to hang on the tree, candle holders, and small figures to place on a shelf or the holiday table. The teddy bears, little birds, and small trees bring a warm and familiar atmosphere into your home, becoming a keepsake to take out every December.
The story of Thun, from the Angel of Bolzano to today
It all began in 1950, in a small workshop in Bolzano, when Lene Thun modeled a clay angel with round cheeks and closed eyes. That angel soon became the symbol of the city, and around it were born teddy bears, ladybugs, butterflies, hearts, and flowers. Lene and Otmar Thun passed their work on to their son and then to their grandson, who still lead the company today. The shapes have remained soft, and the ceramic is chosen with care, just as it was in the beginning. Each collection is inspired by nature and family traditions.
A Christmas gift that lasts over time
A Thun nativity figurine or ornament is a gift that won't be forgotten: you open it once and rediscover it every year. If you don't know where to start, write to us or stop by the store. We will be happy to help you choose the right piece, even based on the nativity scene you already have at home.
